CAN DOGS GIVE MILK TO DRINK?

Surely, when you imagine an animal drinking milk, the first ones that come to mind are cats who happily lap it from their bowl. After all, they love this product so much that they can drink it almost indefinitely. But, if we recall the other four-legged pets, is it possible to say with certainty that dogs drink milk? Most dogs can drink cow or goat milk, but there are also dogs with lactose intolerance. At the same time, most dogs can still easily drink milk.

When can dogs drink milk?

No one doubts that puppies definitely drink mother’s milk. Milk contains sugar, also called lactose, which requires an enzyme called lactase to break down. As a rule, in the body of puppies this enzyme is present in a sufficiently large amount, therefore, splitting of mother’s milk during feeding does not cause problems. However, when taking mother’s milk with ease, puppies cannot tolerate cow or goat milk, which you might want to treat them to by finding it in your refrigerator.

Are dogs lactose intolerant?

As soon as puppies stop receiving mother’s milk, their lactase production level decreases in their bodies, which eventually leads to lactose intolerance by most dogs. With lactose intolerance, the dog’s body exhibits symptoms similar to those that appear in people in this condition.

Dogs may exhibit varying degrees of lactose intolerance, in some of the pets, immediately after milk intake, gastrointestinal tract disorders may be observed, and some may have no symptoms at all, while others may have serious clinical symptoms.

Milk and dairy products, in most cases, become a common cause of food allergies in dogs. Food allergies to milk or dairy products can manifest as irritation, redness, or itching on the skin, as well as gastrointestinal upsets accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea.

What can happen if a dog drinks milk?

In adult dogs, the cleavage process is much slower due to an insufficient amount of the lactase enzyme, which breaks down sugar in milk. Lactose in milk enters the gastrointestinal tract, and from there into the large intestine, where undigested sugar promotes the accumulation of fluid and causes diarrhea, in addition, the fermentation process in the colon can cause flatulence and discomfort.

With an insufficient level of lactase, the consumption of milk by an adult dog causes gastrointestinal upsets in the form of diarrhea and vomiting.
At the same time, whole milk and other dairy products may contain fat, which also leads to diarrhea and vomiting. In addition, when using dairy products, especially those with a high level of fat content, dogs can develop such a potentially serious disease as pancreatitis, which is most often not characteristic of them.

What if the dog drank milk?

Do not worry too much if the dog accidentally licked the ice cream or drank some milk from your mug, unless it has allergies (in this case, the dog should avoid consuming large amounts of milk or dairy products).

Gastrointestinal disorders are usually observed within 12 hours after drinking milk.
Therefore, if your pet accidentally gets to dairy products, for some time it may require a little more of your support than usual, be prepared for any gastrointestinal upsets and discomfort, including vomiting and / or diarrhea.
