For at least 8 years now, rumors have been circulating among dog breeders that the State Duma is about to adopt a law on mandatory animal chipping. But if implantation of electronic chips on the territory of Russia is still voluntary, then in the EU countries each owner voluntarily brings his doggie to a clinic for chipping. And in foreign countries such a procedure has been carried out for more than 20 years.
What is chipping
Dog chipping – assigning a 15-digit unique identification number to animals by introducing a special miniature device under the skin of the shoulder blades – an electronic chip. Such a device consists of a protective glass capsule, receiver and transmitter, antenna and memory unit. A unique 15-digit code is entered immediately into the International Unified Database of Chipped Animals immediately after the chip input operation, and an identification card is issued to the owner.
As an example, consider what the digits of the code mean: 643093411112222, where 643 is the code of Russia, 0 is the division number, 934 is the manufacturer code, and 11112222 is the unique chip number itself. If necessary (for example, if the dog is lost), you can read the code using a special scanner, which is available today in most city veterinarians and in nurseries for temporary keeping animals.
Previously, thoroughbred dogs were given painful stigmas on the inner side of the ear, thigh, abdomen or groin to prevent theft of the pet, as well as to confirm the pure breed of the animal. Today, all the important information about the dog is stored in a small chip (sizes from 2 mm x 12 mm to 1.4 mm x 8 mm), reminiscent of a grain of rice in shape. This identifier is implanted under the skin in the withers area without causing significant discomfort to the dog. Using the implanted chip, you can find comprehensive information about the animal and even some important data of the owner:
To make it easier for the owner to make a decision for or against implanting an electronic device into the subcutaneous space of a pet, we will examine in more detail why to chip a dog:
Dog at the vet
An adult thoroughbred dog can be stolen, and a young and gambling doggie can easily escape from the owner on its own. The chip will help the owner quickly reunite with his lost friend. And this is perhaps the most important chip feature;
The chip can store information about the characteristics of the animal’s health. Such information can be valuable to the veterinarian if the dog is lost;
It is forbidden to import unchipped animals to some foreign countries. Therefore it is necessary to travel without a faithful friend;
Chip dogs are usually allowed to participate in international exhibitions. Perhaps this rule will soon apply to our country;
Finally, if necessary, in court, it is much easier for the owner to prove the rights to his dog, if it is chipped.
How do chipping dogs
So, we have already found out that the electronic identifier is quite useful. But for each owner, it is certainly exciting how dogs are chipped. Everything is simple:
The animal must be delivered to the clinic at the appointed time (in some veterinary institutions they may offer a specialist to go home);
The doctor spreads the coat of the dog at the withers, he treats the skin in this area with an antiseptic, and the puncture site with alcohol;
A chip is inserted under the skin using a special syringe. In this case, the animal feels a minimum of pain, as when administering a vaccine. Soon after implantation, the electronic capsule is overgrown with tissues, its materials do not cause allergic reactions;
Further, all formalities are settled (the dog and owner’s data are entered into the database, a note about the procedure of chipping is put in the veterinary passport, etc.);
For several days, you can put on a dog a protective collar so that the dog does not try to lick or comb the place where the chip was inserted.
