Shar Pei History
The history of sharpei goes back to antiquity. The sharpei breed originated in China, in the province of Kwun Tung, and is mentioned in various historical documents from 206 BC. In China, tombstones and images on vases of animals very similar to modern sharpei have been preserved. Due to its specific features – strong and strong jaws, free-lying and very mobile skin, which gives room for maneuver in capturing another dog, sharpei is used as a fighting dog. But such qualities as intelligence, patience, restraint, love for children, as well as fearlessness made Shar Pei a universal dog, which can be either a hunting assistant or a pet. When Mao Zedong issued a decree stating that the presence of a dog in the house is a sign of bourgeois origin, the sharpei breed almost disappeared. By 1950, only a few populations of this species survived. Animals were secretly exported to Hong Kong, Taiwan and other places inaccessible to the communist regime. In the 70s of the last century, an intensive process of restoration of the sharpei breed began, which was completed successfully, and at the moment this breed is very popular, loved and known throughout the world.
Character features of sharpei
With all the friendliness to his master and members of his family, Shar Pei is also friendly to outsiders. Sharpei are not aggressive, but they are excellent guards, and at the slightest threat to a family member, the dog stands in his defense. In a difficult situation, sharpei is able to take the initiative and make decisions independently, so the dog owner must teach him how to act in certain situations. Representatives of this breed are playful, creative, inventive and deliver a lot of joys and pleasures to their owners.
Games with sharpei dogs or dogs of other breeds need to be controlled – they can become unnecessarily aggressive, and sudden movements can provoke a serious fight. It should be remembered that with all the gaiety, devotion and friendliness, shar pei is a serious fighting and guard dog. These qualities are embedded in the sharpei genes of any standard. Therefore, from childhood, you need to teach your pet to understand what the owner likes in his behavior and what is not.
The dog must be taught how to handle children, strangers, and other dogs. This dog must be taught from childhood. Remember that the dog will grow and build its relationship with it on the basis of its childhood.
