Shar Pei – History, Care, Diseases, Features of the Breed

Shar Pei Origin: China

Application: fighting, for protection, home.

Shar Pei breed standard
Shar Pei is an ancient breed of dog that has several standards. There are three main standards – English, American and Canadian. And if the English and American sharpei standards are not different from each other, then the Canadian standard is very different from the first two. The height at the withers of the Canadian sharpei is 7 cm below the norm, and in this breed there is great freedom in standardizing color.

What should sharpei look like by the standards of the american dog club?
His body is of medium size, strong build, square in shape with muscular shoulders and a wide chest.

Height – 45-50 cm;
Weight – 18-25 kg.
The head is proportional, slightly larger relative to the body, set high and covered with numerous folds on the forehead with a transition to the lateral folds. Deep-set eyes, small, dark, giving sharpei a stern and severe expression. The muzzle is wide, non-pointed. The ears adjacent to the head resemble triangles in shape.

The coat is short, very stiff, does not shine and does not shine. The skin is soft, elastic, forming numerous folds on the body. The skin color according to the standard should be monophonic, with the presence of shades of the main color along the back and on the ears. The tail, like folded skin, is one of the brightest characteristics of sharpei. He is fat, tapering to the bottom and twisted in one direction over his back.

Shar Pei History
The history of sharpei goes back to antiquity. The sharpei breed originated in China, in the province of Kwun Tung, and is mentioned in various historical documents from 206 BC. In China, tombstones and images on vases of animals very similar to modern sharpei have been preserved. Due to its specific features – strong and strong jaws, free-lying and very mobile skin, which gives room for maneuver in capturing another dog, sharpei is used as a fighting dog. But such qualities as intelligence, patience, restraint, love for children, as well as fearlessness made Shar Pei a universal dog, which can be either a hunting assistant or a pet. When Mao Zedong issued a decree stating that the presence of a dog in the house is a sign of bourgeois origin, the sharpei breed almost disappeared. By 1950, only a few populations of this species survived. Animals were secretly exported to Hong Kong, Taiwan and other places inaccessible to the communist regime. In the 70s of the last century, an intensive process of restoration of the sharpei breed began, which was completed successfully, and at the moment this breed is very popular, loved and known throughout the world.

Character features of sharpei
With all the friendliness to his master and members of his family, Shar Pei is also friendly to outsiders. Sharpei are not aggressive, but they are excellent guards, and at the slightest threat to a family member, the dog stands in his defense. In a difficult situation, sharpei is able to take the initiative and make decisions independently, so the dog owner must teach him how to act in certain situations. Representatives of this breed are playful, creative, inventive and deliver a lot of joys and pleasures to their owners.

Games with sharpei dogs or dogs of other breeds need to be controlled – they can become unnecessarily aggressive, and sudden movements can provoke a serious fight. It should be remembered that with all the gaiety, devotion and friendliness, shar pei is a serious fighting and guard dog. These qualities are embedded in the sharpei genes of any standard. Therefore, from childhood, you need to teach your pet to understand what the owner likes in his behavior and what is not.

The dog must be taught how to handle children, strangers, and other dogs. This dog must be taught from childhood. Remember that the dog will grow and build its relationship with it on the basis of its childhood. For example, do not let the sharpei puppy lie on the couch, otherwise when he becomes an adult dog he will not understand why he is chased from the couch.

Shar Pei Care
Shar Pei is a clean dog, and this is a big plus in its content. Teach your puppy to be patient in fulfilling his needs and help him in time to fulfill them whenever he wants – right after waking up, after eating and before bedtime. Then all your problems on this issue will be resolved. Immediately and consistently show the puppy what he can and cannot do.

Shar Pei is very smart and will immediately remember all the rules of living in the house. The main thing is never to backtrack on your decisions. Proper nutrition and physical activity are the two most important aspects of this dog’s life.

Everything related to food you will find in the section “feeding” and “care.” Do not overfeed your pet! Extra pounds reduce the body’s resistance to viral diseases. There is a very good way to check your pet’s physical condition.
